What is Jungyo?
Jungyo, or regional sumo tours, are one of the two main forms of professional sumo events in Japan, alongside the Grand Sumo Tournaments. While the six Grand Sumo Tournaments are held in Tokyo, Osaka, Nagoya, and Fukuoka every other month, Jungyo tours travel to cities across Japan between tournaments, bringing professional sumo closer to local communities.
One of the biggest highlights of Jungyo is the opportunity to see wrestlers up close. The atmosphere is more intimate than at a regular Grand Sumo Tournament, and depending on the event, you may have opportunities to see wrestlers outside of the matches.
Why It’s Different from a Grand Sumo Tournament
Unlike the Grand Sumo Tournaments held at major venues in Tokyo, Osaka, Nagoya, and Fukuoka, Jungyo tours visit cities across Japan and offer a more local and intimate atmosphere.
For visitors who want to experience professional sumo in a more personal setting, Jungyo offers a unique opportunity to get closer to the wrestlers and the local culture surrounding the sport.
